Lully stabs his toe while conducting and dies

Before the use of batons conductors used long sticks and hit those to the floor in the rhythm of the music which was the practice of the time during the Baroque era. The French composer Jean Baptiste Lully, musical director of the court of Louis XIV, also used these. On the 8th of January in 1687 when he preformed his famous "Te deum". The stick he used struck his toe by accident, creating an abscess. The wound turned gangrenous, but Lully refused to have his toe amputated and the gangrene spread, resulting in his death on 22 March. This is a scene from the motion picture "Le roi danse" ("The king is dancing") which acts out this peculiar event.
